Christmas has released me back into the real world! But, where did my entire week off from work vanish to? Christmas seems to have chewed it up and spit me back out. No complaints though--it was nice to see the family, and I am fatter and I have more possessions. The picture to the left is my parent's house all dolled up for the holidays.
I learned an important writing lesson yesterday. Last week I sent off an email query to Byline magazine. I wanted to do write an article for their Great American Bookstores! column, about Watermark Books and Cafe.
I got a prompt reply from the editor:
Dear Kerri,
We just ran an article on Watermark Books in our December issue. Somebody beat you to it!
Now what are the odds? Out of every independent bookstore in the country, the magazine featured the one I submitted, and they featured it this month! I did a Google search and quickly found out who wrote the article (she had it listed in her monthly writer's group newsletter.)

I wanted to roll around on the floor and scream "It's Just Not Fair!" Or, track this women down and tell her that I didn't appreciate her being one step ahead of me. She probably doesn't do things like procrastinate. She probably is a millionaire; a thin, beautiful, millionaire. So today's lesson is: Don't concentrate on being the best, just try to be the fastest.
